Educational Review For Parents

November 2010

by Principal David L. Maugel

“Learning and Teaching Mathematics through Technology” is the focus of the November 2010 issue of Mathematics Teacher. The editors’ article in this issue discusses the exponential growth predicted by Gordon Moore, the founder of Intel, concerning the growth of computer chips. This prediction from 1965 has proven to be correct and is rapidly driving the expansion of educational technology. In the May 2008 issue of Mathematics Teacher, it was noted that the number of applications of technology to education included dynamic handheld technology and the possibility of e-books. NorthWood High School continues to implement handheld technology in math and some science classrooms with other SmartBoard technology expanded to every content area. Taking advice from the article, “We must always be mindful that technology remains a tool for learning, not a replacement for it.” NorthWood will ask several questions and discuss technology as it affects all students. “Which technology applications will increase access learning for all students? How will technology affect classroom discourse as well as conversations beyond the classroom? What do students, parents, and teachers need to become effective consumers of technology?”

Mr. Maugel writes a monthly review of materials he has found from journals, magazines, or other articles that may be of interest to parents.
