Nine members of the NorthWood Logue staff attended the IHSPA
First Amendment Symposium at the Statehouse in Indianapolis. Attendees heard
IHSPA Student Board members present speeches related to their experiences in
telling important stories through their student media platforms. The keynote speaker, Marisa Kwiatkowski, an investigative reporter for the Indianapolis Star who broke the story on the USA Gymnastics/Larry Nassar story, spoke on the importance of journalism in helping to inform society on important social issues. Amongst her own experiences, Kwiatkowski has covered topics ranging from child abuse and neglect, to human trafficking, and mental health issues.
Prior to the symposium, Student Media students studied the
freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment and participated in the IHSPA First
Amendment Graphic Design Contest. NorthWood sophomore Courtney Eby was named
runner-up in the competition.
